Independence Day in Chappaqua
by Todd Eaton and Steven Warshaw

Chappaqua, NY - July 4, 2006 - The Westchester People's Action Coalition Foundation, CodePINK Westchester, No War Westchester (affiliated with WESPAC) and Consumers for Peace called an action in Chappaqua, NY - Hillary Rodham Clinton's adoptive hometown - on the Fourth of July, 2006. Marchers protested Clinton's pro-war positions, including her refusal to demand a deadline for troop withdrawal. Crowd estimates ranged from 85 to 130 protesters.

"Chappaqua's main street was noticeably quiet. We marched mostly in hillside roads, past supporters greeting us from their porch, but also past heckling drivers. We chanted, sang and carried signs calling for an end to the war in Iraq," said Todd Eaton of SDS Brooklyn. "I discovered that Chappaquans like to drum at anti-war actions, just like Brooklynites. And my cowbell fit well with their tom drum. So together percussionists were able to help chanting protesters to keep in sync with each other, even when the march stretched us apart over a good distance. Songs, drumming and chants helped us all to keep moving steadily on a warm day. Neighbors peeked from behind curtains to see what the noise was."

Marchers included Donna Barkman who worked on Clinton's 2000 senatorial campaign but who now feels Clinton has taken a hard right turn on a variety of issues. Some spirited chanting got the attention of local residents some of whom supported the marchers - and were a bit taken aback by the mock coffin, flag draped to bring home the point that while politicians debate exit strategies soldiers are dying. Anti-war Democratic Senatorial hopeful Jonathan Tasini, who is running against Clinton, took part in the action as did Green Party Senate candidate Howie Hawkins.
