Witness Against Torture March

New York City - May 1, 2006

Over 100 members and friends of Witness Against Torture marched from the Isaiah Wall at the United Nations to the US Mission to the UN at 43rd and Lexington at Noon on May Day 2006. Wearing their trademark orange "Stop Torture" t-shirts and accompanied by clergy in vestments the marchers escorted hooded "prisoners" to a vigil at the US Mission: blocking access to the building as the press looked on. Police were unable to make any arrests as the building owner refused to press charges stating that he does not want the US Mission in his building. After a prayer service, the event organizers, Frida Berrigan of the NYC War Resisters League (WRL) and Reverend Sekou of Clergy and Laity Concerned about Iraq (CALC-I) addressed the NYC Press Corps as the vigilers quietly dispersed to "continue their work" to end the US government's use of torture as an instrument of foreign policy.
